Professor Barry Fraser died 17/10/2024

Professor Barry Fraser FTSE FASSA passed away on 17/10/2024. The John Curtin Distinguished Professor at Curtin University, he was elected in 2010 as recognition for his contributions to mathematics education across the world.

His research on science education and learning environments had a global impact, improving educational practices and outcomes for thousands of students. An educator for educators, he created the world’s largest doctoral program for STEM education research, which went on to shape education studies and measurement practices over many years.

At ATSE, he contributed significantly to the Education Forum and was a member of the Membership committee from 2012 to 2015.

Biography at time of election

Barry Fraser's individual achievements and leadership in science and mathematics education have had a transforming influence and impact at the interface of technology and society where science and mathematics education is fundamental to capacity building in the technological sciences and engineering. From Curtin University he has built and leads the world's largest Doctoral program for research in Science and Mathematics Education extending far beyond Australia to Africa, Asia, Europe, North America and the Western Pacific Region. For the breadth, depth and continuity of his leadership he has been internationally recognised by prestigious awards as the world's leading educator of potential leaders in science education
